MomoPay ("MomoPay," "we," "us," or "our") provides a platform that lets communities organize and contribute to fundraisers ("mchangos") using digital dollars, with support for M-Pesa mobile money. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, how it is disclosed, and the security measures we use to protect it. It applies to our website, our early access program, and the MomoPay application once it launches.

  • Contact information: name, email address, and phone number, such as when you sign up for early access or contact support.
  • Identity verification (KYC) information: government-issued identification, date of birth, and other information required to verify your identity and comply with anti-money-laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations before you can fund, hold, or transfer digital dollars.
  • Financial and transaction information: mobile money (M-Pesa) account details, wallet balances, contribution amounts, funding sources, transaction history, and currency conversion activity.
  • Usage and device information: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, pages visited, and similar technical data collected automatically when you use our website or app.
  • Communications: information you provide when you contact us for support or feedback.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account and digital dollar wallet;
  • Process contributions, withdrawals, and currency conversions;
  • Verify your identity and screen transactions to meet KYC, AML, and other legal and regulatory obligations;
  • Communicate with you about your account, transactions, and early access status;
  • Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, unauthorized access, and other harmful activity;
  • Improve and maintain our website and services; and

3. Who We Share Information With

We do not sell your personal information. We disclose personal information only to the following categories of parties, and only as needed to operate MomoPay:

  • Payment processors: including Stripe, to process payments, hold funds, and facilitate currency conversion.
  • Mobile money partners: including Safaricom M-Pesa, to enable funding and cash-out between your wallet and mobile money account.
  • Identity verification and compliance providers: to perform KYC/AML checks and fraud screening required to open and maintain your wallet.
  • Service providers: such as cloud hosting, email delivery, and analytics providers, who process information on our behalf and are contractually required to protect it and use it only for the services they provide us.
  • Regulators and legal authorities: when required by law, court order, or regulation, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of MomoPay, our users, or others.
  • Business transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to the confidentiality obligations described in this policy.

4. How Information Is Disclosed

We disclose personal information to the parties above through secure, encrypted channels such as direct API integrations, secure file transfers, or encrypted database connections. We limit each recipient to only the information necessary to perform its function, and we require service providers and partners to protect your information under contractual confidentiality and data protection obligations. We do not disclose personal information through public postings, unsecured channels, or open data feeds.

5. How We Protect Your Information

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest;
  • Access controls that restrict personal and financial data to authorized personnel on a need-to-know basis;
  • Multi-signature wallet infrastructure to protect user funds;

MomoPay is not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you directly.
